Free Wi-Fi

On May 6, 2014, the City Council authorized the wind down of the City’s Free Wi-Fi Network, effective June 30, 2014. In lieu of the current and outdated Free Wi-Fi Network, City Council has directed staff to implement a pilot Wi-Fi hotspot in a strategically placed location. Given the rapidly changing Wi-Fi technology and manner in which people utilize the Internet, the implementation of a future City hotspot pilot program will allow the City to determine how to best serve its residents, businesses and visitors.

City Pilot Wi-Fi Hotspot Program

On May 6, 2014, the City Council directed staff to implement a pilot Wi-Fi hotspot in a strategically placed location. As a result, Ysmael Villegas Community Center was selected as an ideal location to meet a statistically underserved Internet population and would allow work on the Wi-Fi Hotspot Pilot Project to be completed while the Community Center was under renovation. On October 28, 2014, the City Council approved an agreement with Vector USA for the implementation of a Wi-Fi Hotspot Pilot Project, which was completed on November 10, 2014. At this time, staff is evaluating the effectiveness of the Wi-Fi Hotspot Pilot Project and potential funding sources for additional locations.

Map of Citywide Hotspots

The map below is an overview of more than 300 current and potential Wi-Fi hotspots. City Staff is currently working to develop an interactive map that will allow users to more easily identify where Wi-Fi hotspots operated by governmental agencies and private are located.
